Teamwork: the pull of a superordinate goal
In the public education system, very often, an entire lifetime of service as a government schoolteacher can go unnoticed and unrewarded. And yet, it is within this environment that we also have teachers who respond to an inner calling to do their best for children from disadvantaged backgrounds who come to their schools. Often, these teachers are lone rangers in their schools, which also means that the fortunes of a school are completely dependent on them. Only when a group of fine teachers come together will a school have a more secure future.

The crisis in education is best understood when one considers the problem over the entire spectrum – from early childhood education to school and college education. A World Bank report in 2017, calling attention to the learning crisis, pointed out that by 2021, India will have 372 million children in the 0-14 age group and 367 million in the 15-29 youth group. On that occasion, I wrote that the path to improvement of school education would be through significant investment in teacher preparation and development.

Consolidating small schools without compromising access
The core point is that public education/government schools must be strengthened and supported if we aim to have an equitable society. For more than 50% of India, eking out subsistence livelihoods, government schools are the only road to a better future. Otherwise, we will have only a greater disparity and inequality.
