To check vehicle thefts in the State and to ensure that vehicles are not misused, the transport department has proposed unique embossed stickers to be pasted at various parts on new four-wheelers and two-wheelers, to ease the process of tracking vehicles.

.
Once the stickers containing the registration numbers are pasted on the vehicle’s engine, chassis and other parts, it is not possible to remove them, said a transport department official.

The stickers would be optional at the time of registration of the vehicle as the cost of such stickers, which would also contain the registration numbers, would be Rs 3,000 for four-wheelers and Rs 2,000 for two-wheelers.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, Transport Commissioner Ramegowda said, “The proposal has been sent to the government and we are awaiting the response. To begin with, the stickers could be an option for those who are interested, at the time of registration as shelling out Rs 2,000-3,000 more could be too much. We are still working out the modalities.”

Officials said that the idea came about from Punjab, where a similar project was implemented by an agency. The transport department officials said that a team from that agency had recently met them in Bangalore.

Tenders will be floated

The department will float e-tenders and only then, the agency will be selected, the officials said. Usually, stolen vehicles are misused or sold off by the miscreants by producing fake documents. In fact, the number of vehicles stolen from Bangalore has been increasing by the day and the rate of recovery is dismal.
