India used less electricity in August

India used less electricity in August

Last August, something interesting happened in India. People used less electricity — about 4.7% less than the year before. Why? Because it rained a lot more than usual!

According to a report by PTI, India got 287.1 mm of rain, which is 16% more than what’s normal for August. When it rains like this, it's cooler outside, so not as many people needed to use air conditioners or coolers to stay chill. This meant everyone used less power.

In August 2023, India used 151.32 billion units of electricity, but this August, it dropped to 144.21 billion units. That’s a pretty big drop!

Back in May
Interestingly, everyone was turning on their air conditioners because it was hot, and the electricity demand hit a record high of about 250 gigawatts.

Also, the most electricity India needed in one day (we call this 'peak power demand') was lower this August compared to last. Last year, the peak was 236.29 gigawatts in one day, but this August, it was only 216.68 gigawatts. That's almost 20 gigawatts less!

Interestingly, back in May, everyone was turning on their air conditioners because it was hot, and the electricity demand hit a record high of about 250 gigawatts. That's like every light, computer, and TV on at once in millions of homes!

Now, experts are watching closely because they think the need for electricity might change again. With festivals like Ganesh Chaturthi starting, factories and shops will use more power. So, the numbers might go up again soon!

So, next time it rains a lot, remember it could mean less electricity used, which is actually kind of good for the planet!
