<p class="bodytext">To create awareness on digital payment systems, PG Department of Studies and Research in Computer Science has organised an MHRD-sponsored GIAN course on “Digital Payments: Technology for Cashless Society”.</p>.<p class="bodytext">Prof H Raghavendra Rao from the University of Texas, United States, is the resource person invited to deliver lectures on ‘Digital Payments’ technology.</p>.<p class="bodytext">“In digital payment, both the payer and the payee use digital modes to send and receive money respectively. It is also called electronic payment. All the transactions in digital payments are completed online. It is an instant and convenient way to make payments. Digital payments save from long queues at ATMs and banks,” he said.</p>.<p class="bodytext">The flagship programme of NITI Aayog was organised by Mangalore University in order to address the need of ‘Digital payments’ in this digital era.</p>.<p class="bodytext">The programme was inaugurated by Ratan P Watal, Principal Adviser to NITI Aayog; along with B N Satpathy, consultant, NITI Aayog; Prof K M Balakrishna, Professor in Physics and Dean of Faculty of Science and Technology; and Prof B S Nagendra Prakash, Registrar of Mangalore University.</p>.<p class="bodytext">Ratan P Watal briefed the objectives of NITI Aayog and in particular presented the reason behind this ‘Digital Payments’ initiative under MHRD sponsored GIAN programme.</p>.<p class="bodytext">He emphasised on the adaptability of digital banking and security issues. “There are a lot of challenges involved in this technology, which are being addressed in a phased manner,” he said and added that infrastructure and literacy among the masses are to be considered as top priority for effective implementation of ‘digital payments’.</p>.<p class="bodytext">B N Satpathy spoke about the significance of GIAN programme, which is initiated by the Government of India, in Higher Education.</p>.<p class="bodytext">In his presidential address, Dean and Faculty of Science and Technology Prof K M Balakrishna said that the Mangalore University is providing the best to the student community in terms of these kinds of collaborative programmes and highlighted that the Mangalore University has explored ‘Digital Technology’ way back in 1990s.</p>.<p class="bodytext">Registrar Prof B S Nagendra Prakash said that Mangalore University campus has developed a ‘green campus’ which is ‘plastic free’ as a part of ‘Swachha Bharat Abhiyan.’</p>
