Haryana Assembly Elections 2024: Anil Vij wins from Ambala Cantt. for seventh consecutive time despite dramatic ups and downs

At the start, senior BJP leader Anil Vij led against Congress' Parvinder Pal Pari. Now, he is trailing by 943 votes against Chitra Sarwara, an independent candidate.

Senior BJP leader Anil Vij, who contested from Ambala Cantt. constituency, won the election by 7,277 votes.

At the beginning, he was leading over Congress' Parvinder Pal Pari and then started trailing behind an independent candidate.

Vij, however, bounced back and maintained his lead, later defeating Chitra Sarwara, the aforementioned independent candidate.

Anil Vij won his first election from Ambala Cantt. constituency in 1990 and since then, he has won six consecutive times.

As he eyes for the seventh straight win, the veteran leader has staked a claim for the CM seat even though BJP high command has chosen incumbent Nayab Singh Saini as the CM face.

"I am the party's senior-most MLA and have won six elections and am contesting my seventh one. I have never sought anything from my party so far."

"But people from across Haryana and people of my own constituency have been meeting me... I will stake claim for the chief minister's post," 71-year-old Vij said.

What happened in the 2019 Legislative Assembly elections in Haryana?

The Ambala Cantt. constituency had 1,92,546 eligible voters in 2019, but only saw 1,20,722 votes polled—a turnout of 62.7 per cent.

BJP candidate Anil Vij won the Ambala Cantt. constituency in the 2019 elections, with a margin of 20,165 votes.
