New Delhi: With the three new criminal codes to come into force in three weeks time, Amit Shah on Tuesday took over as the Union Home Minister for the second time pledging to take India’s security to next level and build he country as a “bulwark” against terrorism, insurgency and naxalism.

Shah, who has been holding the most important portfolio since 2019 and returned to the Modi government in the same capacity again, visited the National Police Memorial in the city's Chanakyapuri area to pay homage to policemen who had laid down their lives while serving the nation before taking charge.

Separately, the 59-year-old BJP MP from Gandhinagar also took charge of the Ministry of Co-operation, which he has been holding since its inception during the previous Modi government.

Shah posted on 'X', "under the stewardship of PM Narendra Modi-ji, I reassumed the charge of the Ministry of Home Affairs today. The MHA will remain committed to the security of the nation and its people, as it always has been. Modi 3.0 will take its efforts for India's security to the next level and build Bharat as a bulwark against terrorism, insurgency, and naxalism."

The immediate task before Shah as Home Minister will be the implementation of the three newly enacted criminal laws -- Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita 2023, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita 2023 and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam 2023, which will come into effect from July 1.

These three codes are set to push colonial era Indian Penal Code, Criminal Procedure Code and Evidence Act into oblivion. Bringing the new codes, the government had argued that the new laws will completely overhaul the criminal justice system in the country by getting rid of colonial hangovers.

Shah, a close confidante of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, had been instrumental in pushing and implementing the important legislations and measures of the previous Modi government like the controversial abrogation of special status for Jammu and Kashmir, bifurcation of Jammu and Kashmir into two union territories and contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Act.

With Jammu and Kashmir all set for Assembly polls, Shah will also have to devote extra time in ensuring peaceful conduct of voting.

Shah posted on 'X' before taking over as Home Minister, "remembering the martyrs of our police forces who laid down their lives guarding the honour of the nation and whose saga of sacrifice immortalised the fervour of patriotism forever. Paid floral tributes in their memory at the National Police Memorial."
