Modi government ropes in CISF for Parliament security after breach

New Delhi: The CISF is poised to assume responsibility for the security of the Parliament building from the Delhi Police following a survey of the complex by its experts, officials said on Thursday.

Once the survey, conducted on the instructions of the Ministry of Home Affairs, is complete, a report will be submitted, initiating the takeover process. The CISF will work in coordination with the Parliament Security Services.

The MHA on Wednesday had asked the CISF to undertake the exercise so that "regular deployment of the CISF security and fire wing on a comprehensive pattern" could be done.

Officials of the Government Building Security (GBS) unit of the CISF, along with fire combat and response officers of the force, will conduct the survey. Additionally, officials from the current Parliament security team will also be involved in the process.

The MHA move came against the backdrop of the security breach in Parliament when two youths jumped into Lok Sabha with smoke canisters on December 13.

In the past few days, the security structure in Parliament has witnessed changes to ensure that no untoward incident takes place.

Sources said the CISF has specialisation in guarding government buildings and its expertise would add to Parliament security. The CISF will guard the new and the old Parliament complex, and their allied buildings will be brought under a comprehensive security cover of the force.

The existing security ring consists of the Parliament Security Service (PSS), the Delhi Police and the Parliament Duty Group (PDG) of the CRPF.

Following the recent security breach, a committee chaired by CRPF Director General Anish Dayal Singh is examining the broader security concerns of the Parliament complex and will provide recommendations to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).
