<p>The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is working on a proposal to make FASTags mandatory in all four-wheelers from January 1. <br /><br />Though since 2017, FASTag had been made mandatory for all new four-wheeled vehicles, now the government will make the same for old four-wheelers sold before 1st December 2017. <br /><br />The Ministry will soon make the amendment to the provisions of Central Motor Vehicles Rules to implement this, said an official. <br /><br />To promote digital transaction in national highways toll plazas and reduce the congestion, the government is pushing for the installation of FASTag on vehicles. <br /><br />Once FASTag is made mandatory for all existing four-wheelers, the government authorities can impose fine if any vehicle does not have it, said an official in the Ministry of Transport. <br /><br />Last month the government decided that only those vehicles carry valid functional FASTag will get discount for users who make return journey within 24 hours and all other local exemptions.</p>
