After presenting the awards, each of the winners were offered traditional arathi. <br /><br />Reopen closed schools<br />Speaking at the valedictory, Sammelan President and Senior Researcher Dr M M Kalburgi said that the BJP government should reopen all those schools which were closed down after it came to power. <br /><br />“Closure of Kannada medium schools was a big threat to the language. It is said that over 2,000 Kannada medium schools will be closed down in the State. The CM’s promise of not allowing closure of Kannada medium schools is not enough. The government should make efforts to reopen all the schools, which have been closed down over the last three years,” he urged elucidating that schools are closed citing the reason of shortage of students.<br /><br />“There is a need to find out the reason for the poor attendance in Government schools. Mistakes in syllabus, lack of uniform language policy and lack of infrastructure in schools can be strong reasons for shortage of few students coming to schools,” he opined.<br />Dr Kalburgi said there was a need for experiment in language. There is a difference between spoken language and the written language. <br /><br />“We have produced enough literature. However, there is no market for it. In this background, Kannada writers should learn more than one language. We need language expertise to reach our literature at the international level,” he added. <br /><br />He said litterateurs are not only the part of literature but also part of the society. They should create awareness in the society.<br /><br />Jnanpith awardee Dr Chandrashekhar Kambar was felicitated on the occasion.
