Bangalore University reconsiders rejected candidate for prof post, sparks controversy

Bengaluru: Bangalore University (BU) is facing allegations of reconsidering a candidate previously rejected by the selection panel for the position of zoology professor at its Jnanabharati campus.

Documents accessed by DH has revealed that the university is reviewing an application from Krishnaram, who is demanding his appointment to a position already filled by another candidate, Harini, in 2019. The selection panel, known as the Board of Appointments, recommended Harini for the post, deeming her the most qualified.

The panel’s evaluation of Krishnaram on July 22, 2019, stated: “Not eligible due to lack of PhD guidance, teaching experience, and postgraduate teaching experience.”

However, Krishnaram approached the Karnataka High Court and received a favourable ruling on July 25, 2024.

In response, the university’s legal adviser recommended filing a writ appeal against the order, stating, “The Supreme Court has consistently held that the question of a candidate’s fitness for a specific post should be determined by a duly constituted expert body, such as the selection panel. Courts have limited scope for judicial review in such matters.”

Despite this, a senior professor expressed frustration, noting that instead of challenging the court's order, the university is considering Krishnaram’s application.

"Professors are unhappy and perplexed as to why the case is not being challenged before the divisional bench, as is typically done,” the professor said.

Professors also worry that appointing a candidate deemed ineligible by the selection committee could set a precedent for other unqualified candidates to secure similar posts.

When asked about the issue, Vice-Chancellor Dr Jayakara SM acknowledged awareness of the matter and confirmed that the legal opinion would be presented for discussion at the upcoming syndicate meeting.
