BBMP cracks down on illegal construction and demolition waste dumping

Taking note of the illegal dumping of Construction and Demolition (C&D) across the city, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has directed the officials from the Solid Waste Management (SWM) to take legal action against offenders.

In an order issued by the Joint Director (SWM), the supervisors, junior health officers, and ward marshals, have been directed to inspect all the vehicles carrying C&D waste to be disposed of illegally. “Levy them a fine and report these vehicles to the nearest Police station,” the order said. Further, the order said that the primary responsibility of transporting the C&D waste to a recognised waste processing centre lies on the producer of such waste.

“Dumping in C&D waste in open spaces, drains, vacant plots, roadside areas, and quarries is against the Construction and Demolition waste management rules- 2016 and the offenders can be punished for the same,” the order stated.

The order was issued owing to the rampant dumping of C&D waste in public spaces, especially in the city outskirts.

“Rampant illegal dumping of C&D waste on the roadside and public spaces is painting a negative picture of the city. It is harming the city’s dignity and hence there is a need to take immediate action against the offender,” the order said.

According to the rules, the BBMP can levy a Rs 10,000 fine on violators and also initiate legal proceedings.
