Well, the answer is simple — a pair of coloured contact lens! Blue, green, hazel, grey, black – keep naming the colours of the spectrum and you will probably find them all in an optical shop. And why just celebrities? Many youngsters in the City like to sport coloured lens as well. Metrolife finds out what attracts the youth to colourful pairs of contacts.

Steffie, an MBA student of Garden City College, is extremely fond of coloured contacts. Despite having a perfect eyesight, Steffie wears coloured lens, which have no power. “They are really comfortable and make your eyes look so beautiful,” she says. She has a set, which contains four pairs of different colours — hazel, green, blue and grey. “Though I wear them all often, I like to wear the hazel lens the most as the colour suits my complexion,” she says. Sometimes Steffie matches them with her outfit.

Advising to opt for lens of a good company, Steffie says it was her sister who introduced her to coloured lens. “They are totally in fashion now and look natural. So why not go for them instead of bulky spectacles and glasses?” she asks. However, there are some disadvantages of coloured contacts too. “If dust goes into your eye while you are wearing them, your eye may start hurting badly. So it’s better not to wear them while one is travelling,” says Steffie.

Sucheendra Jain, a software professional, owns a pair of grey lens. “I wear normal lens daily and prefer to wear the grey lens once a week,” he says. “They look good and prove to be a nice change.” However, Sucheendra feels coloured lens are not as comfortable as plain ones. “Plain lens can be worn for a longer period of time.

And in my case, I don’t even feel like I am wearing lens when I wear plain ones. But coloured lens get uncomfortable after a couple of hours.” But when it comes to maintaining coloured contacts, these youngsters feel it’s not much of a hassle. “You just need to maintain them the same way as you would maintain a pair of normal contact lens,” say both Sucheendra and Steffie.

Dr A V Vijay Kumar, an ophthalmologist in Malleswaram, says coloured contact lens are harmless as long as they are used with care. “They are extremely safe and very popular amongst youngsters as a lot of celebrities use them. Earlier, lens were used only for therapeutic purposes (like long or short sight) but now, they are used for fashion as well,” he opines.

“There are a lot of outlets from where you can get lens of all colours. But the most important point to be kept in mind while wearing lens, be it coloured or plain, is to not sleep with them on. Clean them after taking them out of your eyes, put them in a box with the solution and then sleep,” he advises.
