Compound wall of Yelahanka apartment complex collapses after heavy rains

Bengaluru: Heavy rains that lashed Bengaluru on Saturday evening caused widespread chaos, leading to property damage, severe waterlogging and long traffic jams.

The India Meteorological Department’s Bengaluru observatory stated that the city recorded 3 cm of rainfall on Saturday.

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) revealed that the downpour brought down 15 trees and 44 branches.

In Yelahanka, the Kendriya Vihar apartment complex, housing nearly 1,000 units, was flooded when a 50-foot compound wall collapsed. This allowed water from a vacant plot between Yelahanka lake and the complex to flow into the apartment grounds, resulting in about four feet of water accumulating in the basement overnight.

Rescue teams from the fire brigade, the BBMP and the state disaster response force worked with water pumps to drain the water.

A BBMP press release explained that the flooding occurred because the Yelahanka lake, which feeds into 10 other lakes, overflowed. The apartment complex, positioned 25 feet below the lake's shoreline, saw sandbags placed along the collapsed wall area to prevent further flooding.

In Binnypet, a compound wall near ETA Mall collapsed due to heavy rain and overflowing drains. In Vijayanagar, at least 10 homes were affected when a sanitary line near the rajakaluve overflowed.

Rain forecast for the week

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) does not predict rain for Bengaluru city and the neighbouring areas on Monday.

However, isolated heavy rain or thundershowers are expected in Bengaluru Urban and Rural districts on Tuesday. Light to moderate rain or thundershowers are likely across many parts of South Interior Karnataka, including Bengaluru, for the rest of the week.

The IMD forecasts maximum and minimum temperatures of 27°C and 20°C, respectively, for Bengaluru city through Tuesday morning.
