The defining colours of her silhouettes and the graceful cuts and shapes  is what has made designer Reynu Taandon unique.

Her latest collection that she showcased at ‘India Fashion Week’– ‘Coachella Part 2’ is about an independent woman with the bohemian feel, who is very modern, chic and minimalism.

She has used indigo colours, moss crepes, georgette, taffeta and feather crepe for this collection. In a chat with Surupasree Sarmmah, the designer talks about her inspiration, journey in the fashion world and more.

Why fashion designing?

There are two reasons, my passion for creativity and the demand of products. I was into garment exports before I got into this profession. I used to design for my company and that’s when my husband realised that I have an intricate hand. I designed a few scarves for the local market and received a lot of appreciation from people. That encouraged me to take this forward after which there was no looking back. I kept getting orders and I did design a few saris too for a friend’s boutique.

Your style of work...

It is completely ‘passionable’; I sometimes design certain garments without thinking whether it will be trending, accepted by customers or will look nice. If my heart says to do it, I will create it. Likewise, comes the colours to my mind, without thinking too much about it, I start designing.

What has been your inspiration?

My inspiration comes from different things from around the world. It can be a simple tree with beautiful fruits and flowers or a colour that caught my eyes. Travel has played an important part in my designing.

Your favourite fabric?

It has to be georgette. It’s been 19 years since I’ve been in this profession and I have loved this fabric since the very beginning. But I have started working with ‘Chanderi’ from the last two seasons and I am really happy with it.

Most difficult fabrics to work with?

Silk and wool lycra has to be the most difficult fabrics.

You have been a part of the design fraternity for a long time now. Is there anything that you would like to change about the industry?

I would like to change the customers’ mind a little bit. When a fashion is trending people don’t understand that certain body type can’t sport that trend. And it is absolutely fine. We don’t have to feel bad about it. If a person is small for a certain look, they have to accept it, the same is for other body types. We designers work for everybody and we will create other trends for them.

Three must-haves in your wardrobe...

I have to have my best jeans always with me. I am very fond of trendy shoes and like to have the latest in my wardrobe. Also, a nice makeup kit is necessary for me.
