Illegal constructions threaten old charm of Bengaluru's Nandidurga Extension

Residents worry about overcrowding and resource shortages as seven-storey buildings rise on plots as small as 30x40 square feet. Despite deviations exceeding 100% in some cases, the BBMP’s actions have been limited to issuing notices.

Bengaluru: The BBMP has ignored nearly a dozen illegal constructions in Nandidurga Extension, an area known for its old Bengaluru charm, with over 90 bungalows and numerous trees.

Residents worry about overcrowding and resource shortages as seven-storey buildings rise on plots as small as 30x40 square feet. Despite deviations exceeding 100 per cent in some cases, the BBMP’s actions have been limited to issuing notices.

Satya Achayya, a local resident, said that BBMP officials have not halted an illegal building on 6th Cross Road, despite her repeated complaints. She fears that, without enforcement, more property owners will begin to disregard building regulations.

“The illegal construction poses a risk, especially with a gas depot at the end of the road. Residents of Windsor Court, Paalana Bhavana, and the United Theological College share similar concerns,” she said.

BBMP officials stated they have issued notices to four buildings, citing deviations of up to 107.45 per cent. However, residents claim no demolitions have occurred, even following inspections in August.

"Future generations will pay for today’s urban governance failures," said Satya.
