Apurva Kasaravalli has a lineage that anyone would envy. Son of acclaimed director Girish Kasaravalli and late actor-director Vaishalli, it was inevitable he would take to direction.

Apurva has no qualms admitting that his father has influenced him both as a person and as a film-maker. He confesses that he has taken the best from both his parents.  Apurva is responsible for bringing Bollywood actor Rahul Bose to Sandalwood.
His latest directorial, Niruttara, follows the life of four different people and how their paths criss-cross. He says that it is the script of Niruttara that clinched the deal.  It’s a story about relationships not just between a man and woman. The director has done well to explore all kinds of relationships.

“People have to work hard to keep relationships sailing smooth. It’s a new-age story and the characters strike an instant connect with people,” he adds. In Niruttara, Bhavana Ramana plays the role of a Hindustani musician. Aindrita Ray is a documentary filmmaker, Kiran Srinivasan is a rock musician and Rahul Bose essays the role of a vice-president of a company.

How did Apurva zero in on Rahul Bose? “We wanted someone who is suave and sophisticated to play that role. When I narrated the script and the role to Rahul, he didn’t think twice before signing on the dotted line,” explains Apurva. He points out that Rahul’s story portrays what happens to people as they go up the ladder. “The higher you climb, the fewer friends you have and you tend to share minimal relations with people. This is something we see and experience around us,” he adds.

Apurva has been influenced by the work of his parents. “As children, we were exposed to a lot of cinema and most of the conversation would be centred around cinema and the socio-political context of telling a story,” reasons Apurva. He says that he would spend hours simply observing the way his father worked and interacted with people. “I hope to pick up his dedication and passion towards telling stories,” he signs off.
