It was her inclination towards creativity and the diverse culture of Delhi, where she grew up, that inspired designer Parul J Maurya to choose this field.

A decade into designing and she has successfully captured the attention of many fashion icons. Her love for travel has also been a major source of inspiration for her designs.

In a chat with Surupasree Sarmmah, Parul talks about her latest collection, her dream design and more.

If not a designer...

I would have definitely chosen a creative field — may be something related to filmmaking or art.

The best thing about this profession.

Wherever you go and whoever you meet, you always find a creative edge and a creative mind. You can take inspiration from so many different things around the world. You always find a different perspective.

Your work is inspired by...

My forte is hand-painted designs. In fact, I have a new signature collection which is all hand-painted. I have created both Indian and Western wear in that collection. I travel a lot and that has exposed me to different cultures. Actually, the process starts from there. Apart from my travels, nature has been a great inspiration too. I collect different things from different markets across the world and I keep experimenting with them with the help of my team.

Your favourite material to work with...

I like working with organic fabrics. Organza, linen, khadi and silks have been my weakness for a long time.

Three ‘must items’ in your travel bag...

A cool pair of white shirt and denim jeans, a little black dress, shorts and a comfortable T-shirt.

Tell us about your latest collection...

It is a trousseau collection that I have worked on. It includes both Indian and Western pieces. All of them are hand-painted and embroidered. We have kept the colour palette a little dull. Beige, gold, grey, white and ivory are some of the highlights this time. Organza, tissue, silk and brocade are the primary fabrics we have concentrated on.

Is there anyone you particularly want to work with in the film industry?

Since I have seen Kareena Kapoor Khan carrying of the maternity fashion so gracefully, I would like to design something especially for her. This is something that I have in my mind at present.

Any dream design you have in mind...

I would love to design a grand and extravagant cocktail gown for one of the international red carpet events this year.
