<p> As the deadline of August 15 to set up Indira Canteens is nearing, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike is working on making the facilities ready before August 1.<br /><br />On Friday, Mayor G Padmavathi, along with corporators and Palike officers, visited Krishnagiri in Tamil Nadu where a multinational company, KEF Infrastructure, is fabricating the canteens at its offsite manufacturing facility.<br /><br /> The Palike is building these canteens in each of the 198 wards. These precast materials will be brought to Bengaluru and assembled at the designated places.<br /><br />The mayor told reporters that the canteens will be ready before the deadline as the pace of work was satisfactory. <br /><br />She said that though the precast material is light, it is strong enough to last more than 100 years.<br /><br />According to Palike sources, the firm agreed to build these structures at a cost of Rs 28.5 lakh each against Rs 34 lakh quoted earlier. The manufacturer displayed a fully furnished model canteen at its site.<br /><br />Company executives made a power-point presentation showing how they constructed a 12-storeyed corporate hospital in a very short time span. They also claimed that these precast structures are stronger and more durable than conventional buildings.<br /><br /></p>
