Residents of HSR Layout have adopted a novel way to point out the damaged roads that need asphalting. They have taken to Google maps to locate the potholes and help Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) identify them easily.

.
HSR Layout residents said that in the past one week they have been noticing how the 19th main at sector 3 and 24th main at sector 1, among other good lanes, are being retarred by Palike officers in their locality and that this action has inspired them to start the project. Along with the potholes, the maps also display the places where garbage is being burnt and waste is being dumped.

“We have shared our project with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, the local MLA Satish Reddy and the BBMP Joint Commissioner (Bommanahalli) Muniraju on Monday. The map has been created by software engineer Syed Imran along with the support of other residents. For now, the potholes have been identified on 3rd main, 17th cross, sector 7; 22nd main, sector 1;19th Main; 22nd cross from HSR club to 14th main stretch, sector 4; 15th main, 15th cross and 31st main, sector 1,” said HSR Layout resident, Zahid H Javali.

Lalithamaba, a resident, pointed out that Somasundarapalya Road is in a bad shape and dotted with potholes. She said: “We often see BBMP officials re-asphalting only good roads. We hope, through this initiative, wastage of public money by the BBMP and the elected representatives is stopped and reduced.”

To help residents address the problem of potholes and civic issues easily, a WhatsApp group called 'Residents Watch' has also been created. “Residents can post the image of the potholes and give information on that. Accordingly, volunteers can identify potholes on Google maps. There are already 70 residents who are part of this group, apart from councillors, MLAs and other officials," added Javali, who is also the admin of the WhatsApp group.

A YouTube video on Google maps shot by residents of HSR Layout has also been uploaded. Along with that, a Twitter account called @icitizen47 has been created, where residents can post their grievances.
DH News Service
