Every year, a large number of students aspire to be a part of the council and a long process of interviews is held on campus for the same. Finally, it is their determination and their will to make a mark that helped Salman Raj, Nida Fathima, Navyashree, Sundeep Yadav and Syed Ismail Rameez make it to the student council for the current academic year.

Now that they have finished almost six months of the current academic year, the members of the council tell Metrolife that there is nothing more satisfying than seeing their fellow students enjoying every bit of campus life. Says Salman, the president of the council, “It’s a huge responsibility on our heads but so far, we have taken up each challenge and enjoyed every bit of it.”

Being a part of the student council is not always about fun and games. These students have to strike a balance between their studies and extra-curricular activities. They even need to come up with innovative ideas to keep the students occupied. Most of their work happens during breaks and after college hours.

“Apart from motivating the students and finding hidden talent among them, we also take the responsibility of fests and cultural activities. We come up with themes, innovative decorations and budgets for our fests and also ensure that all the class representatives are aware of the various happenings,” says Navyashree, the secretary.

Brainstorming and team work are the keys to success, says Syed, the treasurer. “We have seen how our seniors have worked earlier and have picked up a lot from them. At the same time, we want to build on their ideas and bring in something better and fresh to the college activities. We also invite students to come forward with their suggestions,” he adds.

In the past few months, there are two new things that the council has introduced — the ‘Ethnic Week’ and the fashion team. Nida, the vice president, says that they are very proud of these two achievements as it was not an easy task for them. “Generally, we see colleges celebrating ethnic day only on one day. But we thought we need to celebrate our ethnicity and it’s not every day that we get to come to college in our traditional clothes. When we pitched this idea, all the students were for it and we got a great response,” she adds.

As far as forming the fashion team was concerned, the entire council had to go through a lot to get permission. “Convincing everyone was the hardest part but I guess it was all worth it. The team has actually won many competitions in various fests,” says Nida.

At the end of the day, it’s the smiling faces of the students that matter to them. “There is no point of doing so many things if the students themselves don’t enjoy or participate in them. We want these activities to motivate the students to come forward and showcase their talents. So without their support, none of these would be a success,” sums up Salman.
