'Distressed over not getting selected for his college cricket team

Bengaluru: A 16-year-old boy died after falling from the seventh floor of an apartment building in eastern Bengaluru in the early hours of Monday, reportedly after not being selected for his college cricket team, the police said.

After a preliminary investigation, the Hennur police suspect that the boy jumped from the building between 1.30 am and 5 am at the Mantri Splendor apartment complex in Geddalahalli.

"His parents were at home at the time of the incident,” a police officer said. "They lived on the fourth floor. The father is a techie and the mother a homemaker. The boy was their only child."

Senior police officers said the teen was a first-year Pre-University College (PUC) student at a local institution.

Sources within the police department revealed that the boy was distressed about not being selected for the college cricket team. "We believe this may have led him to take the extreme step," a police officer said. "However, an investigation is ongoing. He had also asked his parents to change his school, but they declined his request as it was mid-academic year."

On Sunday, following an argument, the boy left home. When his parents contacted him, he told them he would return by evening.

"His parents assumed he was at a friend's place and went to bed. However, he returned home late in the night and is believed to have jumped from the building. No note has been recovered so far,” another officer added.

The Hennur police have registered an Unnatural Death Report (UDR). The boy's body was handed over to the parents after the autopsy.
