<p class="bodytext">Deputy Commissioner Priyanka Mary Francis said a proposal will be submitted to the government to sanction additional civic workers to Udupi CMC jurisdiction.</p>.<p class="bodytext">Inaugurating Udupi District Federation of Civic Workers’ Association, she said civic workers should be sanctioned not only by looking at the population criteria alone. “The district is known for tourist spots. Hence, additional civic workers should be sanctioned,” she said.</p>.<p class="bodytext">“The civic workers were not recruited for Udupi CMC and other urban local bodies in the district. The recruitment can be initiated after getting an order from the government. In 2018, the government had issued an order banning the appointment of the civic workers on contract. Tumakuru and Udupi districts have implemented the orders effectively,” she said.</p>.<p class="bodytext">The DC said civic workers die at an early age. The civic workers should not get addicted to alcohol and other bad habits. They should be cautious and take measures to maintain hygiene while at work. They should use the safety materials given to them while working, she added.</p>.<p class="bodytext">On the occasion, Central National Law School base community researcher Dr R V Chandrashekhar said the calculation of the government on civic workers is unscientific. It is not one civic worker for 700 persons, it should be in the ratio of 1: 500 population, he said and demanded the government to revise the rule.</p>
