<p>Mitra Heraje, retired Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP), was arrested and released on ‘station bail’ for driving his car in an inebriated state and ramming a two-wheeler on the wrong side at Battagudde on late Saturday night.</p>.<p class="bodytext">According to the police, Heraje was driving his car from Circuit House to Battagudde Junction on the wrong side.</p>.<p class="bodytext">He not only disrupted the movement of traffic plying from the opposite direction but rammed a two-wheeler. Heraje, however, did not stop but attempted to flee from the spot.</p>.<p class="bodytext">The public, who gathered at the spot after the accident, stopped the car and gheroaed Heraje.</p>.<p class="bodytext">As a large number of people had gathered at the spot, police rushed to the spot and resorted to mild lathi charge in order to disperse the crowd.</p>.<p class="bodytext">Mangaluru City Commissioner of Police T R Suresh said the traffic police have booked a case against Heraje on charges of drunken driving and wrong side driving. He was arrested and later released.</p>.<p class="bodytext">DCP (Crime and Traffic) Uma Prashanth said a case was registered against Heraje under IPC Sections 279 and 388. The vehicle was seized and investigation is on.</p>.<p class="bodytext">Heraje had entered the Police Department as sub-inspector and had retired as additional SP.</p>.<p class="bodytext">He is a recipient of chief minister’s gold medal for meritorious services.</p>.<p class="bodytext">He also had served as vice president of Karnataka State Retired Police Officers’ Welfare Association and president of Dakshina Kannada District Retired Police Officers’ Welfare Association.</p>
