<p>The seminar was organised at the University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering (UVCE) on the occasion of the National Energy Conservation Day on Tuesday. <br /><br />UVCE Principal Dr Venugopal K R emphasised on tapping the vast solar energy and said that India stood to benefit from it because it was located in the tropical zone. <br /><br />“With fossil fuels depleting fast, high emissions of carbon-di-oxide have been leading to global warming, acid rains and toxic air emissions. It is necessary to take up solar, wind and bio-diesel and other cleaner energy sources,” he said.<br /><br />He also said that 400 million Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs) can reduce 20 million tonnes of carbon-di-oxide emission and save 30,000 crore and 6,000 MW energy per year. <br /><br />Principal Secretary of Department of Energy Shamim Banu underscored the need to conserve energy. <br /><br />Managing Director of Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (BESCOM) P Manivannan felt that without meeting targets in energy conservation, global warming could not be reduced.</p>
