About four per cent of the coffee of the world is grown in India. Indian growers should be ready to face challenges from growers of other countries of the world. <br /><br />“Coffee is one of the commercial crop which has great demand across the globe. Hence, there is a need to organise coffee mela in major cities of India,” he said. <br /><br />Speaking on pepper, Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) retired principal Dr M N <br />Venugopal said the demand for pepper has not declined across the globe. There is a need to increase pepper production. <br /><br />“The weather in Kodagu is conducive for growing pepper. Along with increasing the yield, there is a need to maintain quality. The farmers should give importance to post harvest of pepper.” <br /><br />Senior scientist Dr Chandramauli spoke on diseases affecting pepper and the ways to control it. H C Ramesh spoke on pepper cultivation. <br /><br />Coffee and pepper growers had taken part in the meeting.</p>
