Karnataka mulls temporary ban on vehicle registration

The state government seems to have woken up to the worsening air quality in Bengaluru. Alarmed at the sharp rise in pollutants, the government is mulling suspending registration of new vehicles. Deputy Chief Minister G Parameshwara on Friday hinted that the government will soon take a decision on this.

Reviewing the steps taken by Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) to resolve the burgeoning garbage crisis across the city which has drawn flak from the high court, Parameshwara also stated that steps will be taken to address the worsening air quality in the city.

“The immediate need of the hour is to find a solution to the traffic problem and address the issue of air pollution in Bengaluru. The state government has been contemplating several measures to resolve the problem including temporary suspension of registration of new vehicles in the city and the introduction of more electric buses. All these issues are at the discussion stage and very soon we will take a call on them,” Parameshwara said.

When asked for more details on the temporary ban on registration of new vehicles Parameshwara clarified, “Temporary ban on registration of new vehicles is only a thought at this juncture and we are yet to discuss it in detail. New Delhi is also facing a similar situation and pollution has reached an alarming stage. Before such a situation prevails over Bengaluru, we need to be cautious and wake up to the threat. Hence, we have been mulling over a volley of issues and they are at different stages of discussion currently."
