<p class="title">‘Kohinoor’ diamond might have been a bad omen to those who owned it.</p>.<p class="bodytext">But a question on Kohinoor diamond swung the victory in favour of the team from Little Rock Indian School-Brahmavar, who successfully cracked the tie-breaker question to win the Mangaluru zonal-level Prajavani Quiz Championship 2018, held at Sri Sudhindra Auditorium in Canara Girls High School in Dongarakeri on Thursday.</p>.<p class="bodytext">In the keenly fought contest, the teams from Sharada Vidyalaya and Little Rock Indian School had scored 100 points each resulting in the tie-breaker. When asked to identify the precious stone which got ill-luck to its owners, it was Druhan R Shah and Prabhav Shetty from Little Rock Indian School who correctly answered as “Kohinoor diamond”.</p>.<p class="bodytext">Immediately, the packed audience cheered as Little Rock Indian School was adjudged as the winner of the zonal-level quiz competition. The team will represent Mangaluru in the state finals of quiz championship.</p>.<p class="bodytext">As many as 180 students from Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts took part in the preliminary round of the event presented by ‘Deeksha’ and powered by team ‘Quriosity’.</p>.<p class="bodytext">Among the six teams that made it to the zonal level, the team of Nishkal Rao and Pannaga Bhat from Sharada Vidyalaya came second, Siddarth and Chirag from Amritha Vidyalaya-Boloor came third, Ashvith Shetty and Pawan S Shetty from Sri Siddhivinayaka Residential School-Hattiyangadi, Kundapur, came fourth, Srijan S Bhat and Prabhav Shetty from Vishwamangala High School-Konaje came fifth and the team comprising Tejaswi Narayana and Agneya D A from SDM English Medium School came sixth. </p>.<p class="bodytext">The teams that bagged first, second and third places were awarded cash prizes of Rs 6,000, Rs 4,000 and<br />Rs 2,000 respectively.</p>.<p class="bodytext">Druhan R Shah and Prabhav Shetty from Little Rock Indian School, Brahmavar expressed happiness on winning the zonal-level Prajavani quiz competition in their very first attempt.</p>.<p class="bodytext">“The quiz was tough but was also a lot of fun,” they stressed.</p>.<p class="bodytext">Nishkal Rao and Pannaga Bhat from Sharada Vidyalaya regretted missing the first prize by a whisker.</p>.<p class="bodytext">“Our school has been participating in the Prajavani quiz for the past three years,” they said.</p>.<p class="bodytext">Many questions posed to the contestants, including the preliminary round, were based on the culture prevailing in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts.</p>.<p class="bodytext">During the preliminary round, the participants were told to identify Tulu scripts shown on the screen. Also, questions on Mangaladevi temple, the first Kannada newspaper ‘Mangalura Samachara’, ‘Modi sardines’, local evening snack ‘Golibaje’, Wenlock hospital, tiger dance, ‘Kambala’, St Mary’s island among others helped participants gain in-depth knowledge about their own region.</p>.<p class="bodytext">Audience too, exhibited a great spirit by cracking some of the tough questions which were unanswered by the participating teams.</p>.<p class="bodytext">International Kabaddi player and Bank of Baroda-Suratkal Assistant Manager Uday Chowta was the chief guest. Chowta had represented the Indian Kabaddi team which won the second World Kabaddi Championship in 2007. </p>.<p class="bodytext">Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat (DKZP) Chief Executive Officer (COE) Dr R Selvamani was the chief guest. Prajavani Mangaluru Chief of Bureau M G Balakrishna and Deccan Herald-Prajavani Mangaluru Circulation Manager Prakash Nayak were also present.</p>.<p class="bodytext">Meghana Gowda was the quiz master. Pranav and Swasthik, who represented team Quriosity, were the main coordinators of the quiz event. </p>.<p class="bodytext">The zonal-level Prajavani quiz championships were also conducted in Mysuru and Hassan. The Davanagere zonal-level quiz will be held on January 11. The finals will be held in Bengaluru on January 24.</p>
