Sattar, a bus driver, along with his two friends - rickshaw driver Irshad alias Baddumunde of Jokatte and Althaf - had rushed to the spot on hearing about the Air India Express air crash on May 22. As search and rescue workers were busy in shifting the bodies, the trio quietly removed golden jewellery on victims' bodies and pocketed them.

Their behaviour for the first couple of days did not arise any suspicion. But Sattar could not keep quiet for long. After a couple of days, his style of living changed and the people in the area grew suspicious and informed the DCIB sleuths.

On credible information that Sattar was coming to Mangalore on Tuesday to sell the golden jewellery he stole, DCIB sleuths lay in wait for him on Tuesday. They stopped his car and questioned him. When he failed to give satisfactory answers, they searched his car and seized eight bangles, three mangalsuthra, a chain, a pendant, a pearl chain and the Santro car he was driving.

DCIB sleuths, led by Venkatesh Prasanna, raided Sattar's house and seized more jewellery hidden inside a chicken coop. In all, the sleuths have seized 256.9 gm gold valued at Rs 6,36,700.

Interestingly, Sattar was not involved in any criminal case earlier.
He was produced before the court. The other accused Althaf and Irshad are absconding.
