<p>With the work related to the implementation of ambitious first Multi-village Water Supply Scheme of the district near Kinnigoli speeding up, the Zilla Panchayat has now decided to implement the scheme in different villages of the district.<br /><br />Having studied the scarcity of drinking water faced by the villagers in different parts of Dakshina Kannada, the Zilla Panchayat has made up its mind to construct vented dams across the rivers in the district to supply drinking water to the villages through ductile pipes. <br /><br />Speaking to Deccan Herald Zilla Panchayat Executive Engineer Sathyanarayana S L said “every year we receive complaints from the people’s representatives on the shortage of drinking water during the peak summer. The villagers can’t afford to depend on bore wells and open well alone as the amount of water reduces in the wells considerably during the month of March and April.Taking all this into consideration, the ZP has decided to look out for alternative forms of water sources which would provide water to the villagers throughout the year. This lead to the implementation of Multi-village Water Supply Scheme,” he said.<br /><br />10 centres in the list<br /><br />Further, he informed that in the 2011 budget the State government has allocated lump sum amount for the execution of water projects in the district and the Multi-village Water Supply Scheme will be financed under the same allocation. <br /><br />As of now the Zilla Panchayat has identified 10 centres in Mangalore and Bantwal taluks.<br /><br /> The centres include Konaje covering 10 villages, Golthamajalu (two villages), Narikombu (four villages), Sarappadi (14 villages), Sangabettu (17 villages), Majhni (three villages), Naringana (nine villages), Kolnadu (four villages), Sajeepa Mogaru (four villages) and Kairangala (three villages). <br /><br />“The dams will be constructed on the major rivers like Netravati and even the river tributaries. A treatment plant will be set up in the nearby place and the water will be supplied through ductile pipes,” he said. <br /><br />Meanwhile he said the ZP will submit the proposal of the scheme to the government by March end and will commence the work once the government approves and tenders are invited. “The estimate cost for the construction of each dam and treatment plant would vary from Rs 20 crore to Rs 60 crore”, he informed. <br /><br />He added that each project will be completed within a time frame of less than two years. When asked on the criteria for choosing the centres he said, based on a survey of the villages carried out by the Zilla Panchayat, the villages facing acute water shortage were shortlisted and were selected as the scheme beneficiaries.<br /><br /> However the ZP intends to include even other villages in Belthangady and Sullia taluk if the people representatives of those taluks come up with the proposal within ten days, he said.</p>
