<p>From February 15, those dumping garbage in Charmadi Ghat on National Highway 73 will be slapped with a stiff penalty, Charmadi Gram Panchayat (GP) has warned.</p>.<p>Charmadi GP Panchayat Development Officer (PDO) Prakash Shetty said the Panchayat will also not hesitate to even file criminal cases against those dumping garbage and polluting the pristine forests. As a deterrent, the Panchayat had slapped a fine of Rs 500 on a man who was caught red-handed while dumping the garbage. The man who threw garbage was from Ujire, he said.</p>.<p>Prakash Shetty told <span class="italic">DH</span> that the Panchayat and the local residents together were creating awareness on not throwing garbage by the side of highway or public places for the past two months. The Panchayat had been making announcements in this regard through a loudspeaker mounted on a vehicle. It will soon install CCTV cameras at identified places to further discourage the dumping of garbage, he added.</p>
