Rain uproots trees; power supply affected

The rain in the Ghat region – especially in Kadaba – on Sunday night has led the water level in the Gundya stream to rise.

This has, resulted in inundation of the Hosamata bridge on the Uppinangady – Kadaba highway.

The bridge had been closed for vehicular movement on Sunday and was not opened on Monday too.

With the new bridge still under construction, the vehicles are forced to use the old bridge.

Two-wheeler users, however, are seen using the new bridge to cross the stream. The closure of the road has also inconvenienced people visiting the Kukke Subrahmanya Temple, as they have to now use an alternative road.

Sources have said that Uppinangady has received 10 cm rain on Monday, 5 cm on Sunday and 7 cm on Saturday.

An old building at Kombaru Pete has collapsed due to heavy rain. Both Kumaradhara and Nethravathi rivers are in spate in Uppinangady. Officials have therefore been camping on the banks of the rivers.

Water from Kumaradhara river flowed on to the Kadaba-Panja Road at Pilikukku and prevented movement of traffic. Incessant rain led to rise in water level in streams and rivers at Alankuru, Koila, Perabe, Kombaru, Bilinele, Noojibalthila, Ramakunja and nearby areas.

Water from River Nethravathi has entered farmlands at Mogru, Ilanthila, Daddu and Kootelu. Also, water from the Gundya stream and Kumaradhara flowed into farmlands situated on the banks of the water bodies.

The uprooting of electricity poles in Belthangady disrupted power supply to Malekudiya community residing in the Kudremukh National Park in the taluk.

Over 25 to 30 electricity poles have been uprooted at Jalade, Pilikala, Kambuje, area in Belthangady.

Power was disrupted in various parts of Mangaluru city too as a result of the rain havoc.

Trees were uprooted at Bajjodi-Premanagara, Devinagara, Marigudi, Hoige Bazar, Kottara Chowki in Mangaluru. An old building too has collapsed at Car Street in Mangaluru. One auto rickshaw and a car were damaged when a tree fell at Kadri Shivbhag. Two houses were damaged at Balmatta and one house at Panjimogaru.

In Udupi

Brahmavar has received heavy rain. The gusty wind uprooted trees and electricity poles.

A huge tree uprooted and fell on the Brahmavar-Hebri stretch of the national highway at Kunjalu bus stand on Sunday night and affected vehicular movement till Monday morning.

Damage to electricity poles has affected the power supply from the Cherkadi feeder since Sunday night. Power was not restored till Monday evening.

Padisalu and Seetha rivers are in spate. The low-lying areas in Brahmavar were inundated. Although heavy rain lashed Sasthana, Saligrama, and Kota, no damage has been reported.

According to Mescom officials, 43 electricity poles have been uprooted in the district in the last two days.

Following the inclement weather, fishermen have not ventured into the sea. As a result, mechanised boats have been anchored at Malpe.
