St Ann’s College to celebrate its platinum jubilee

St Ann’s College of Education, Mangaluru, will organise its platinum jubilee celebrations on November 30.

College principal Sr Clare told reporters that the programmes will begin with the thanksgiving Eucharistic celebration at St Ann’s Convent chapel at 9.30 am.

Mangaluru Bishop Dr Peter Paul Saldanha will be the main celebrant. Cultural programmes will be held at the college auditorium at 4 pm.

Apostolic Carmel Congregation superior general M Susheela will preside over the function. Karnataka provincial superior carmel Rita, Apostolic Carmel Generalate Bengaluru general councillor for education Dr Sr Lydia Fernandes and KES secondary education director Philomena Lobo will be the chief guests.

Rosario Cathedral rector Fr J B Crasta, Apostolic Carmel Educational Society Sr Ida Barboza are guests of honour.

The programme will include the reminiscence of platinum years, felicitation and prize distribution and a tableau titled ‘Jnana Jyothi’ depicting the progress of the Apostolic Carmel Congregation and the growth of the institution.

About the institution

Sr Clare meanwhile said that the college, now a government aided autonomous institution, was established in 1943.

The then superior general of Apostolic Carmel Congregation, Mother Josephine was instrumental in establishing the St Ann’s Training College on July 1, 1943, with the approval of the University Grants Commission and with the formal sanction from the Registrar of Madras University.

The college offered the LT degree (Licentiate in Teaching), which later came to be known as BT (Bachelor of Teaching) degree and eventually, BEd degree.

In 1956, the college was renamed as St Ann’s College of Education, as per Mysore University norms.

The college was affiliated to Mangalore University in 1980. M Ed and PGDCA (Post Graduate Diploma in Computer Applications) were introduced in 1992 and 1997 respectively.

The college was selected as the study centre for M Ed of Karnataka State Open University (KSOU). IN 2005, IGNOU selected the college as ‘partner institute’ under open distance learning scheme.

A research centre was started in 2008 towards PhD studies in education. Till date, 51 research scholars have registered for PhD and 25 have obtained the degree. The rest are pursuing research.

So far, 5,553 B Ed students, 573 M Ed students, 138 PGDCA students and 373 pre-primary teacher trainees have passed out from the institution, added Sr Clare.
