Street play, Yakshagana to spread message on voting

The Udupi Sveep Committee is gearing up to create awareness on importance of voting through street play and Yakshagana.

The street play includes a dialogue between landlord and labourer on payment of wages despite polling being a holiday.

The Sveep committee has already identified areas where the polling turn out was low in the previous election and will create awareness to improve voting by organising Yakshagana and street play. Various scenes like those who go for a tour on the day of voting, watch cricket and play cricket on holiday, luring voters by offering cash and liquor and others will be used for create awareness on ethical voting.

The street plays will be staged by Karavali Janapada Kala Vedike of Surathkal. It will also create awareness on the toll free number 1950 and various facilities offered to the voters at the polling booths.

The street plays are written by Girish Navada of the Kala Vedike.

Yakshagana is also used to create awareness. Akshara Dasoha retired officer Nagesh Shanbagh has written the Yakshagana Prasanga and will be presented by artistes of Kalapeeta of Kota.

An awareness programme for physically challenged persons will be held at Balbhavan in Brahmagiri on March 30 at 11 am.

A bike rally for physically challenged and a variety of entertainment programmes will be held on the shores of Malpe beach at 4 pm.

An awareness programme for sexual minorities and women were organised by the Sveep committee at Balbhavan in Udupi on Thursday.

Speaking on the occasion, Udupi DC Hephsiba Rani Korlapatti urged the women and transgenders not to skip voting.

Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Sindhu Roopesh administered an oath on exercising franchise. Transgenders too presented a play to create awareness on voting. Rangoli and signature campaign was also held.
