Kerala landslides: CM Pinarayi Vijayan announces Rs 6 lakh compensation to kin of deceased; Lidar survey to determine land use pattern

Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala government has decided to give an assistance of Rs 6 lakh each to the dependents of those killed in the Wayanad landslide apart from providing proper rehabilitation.

The government also decided to conduct a Lidar survey, a laser mapping technique, at the landslide hit regions with the help of NIT, Surathkal in order to determine the future land use patterns.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said that dependents of those missing would be given the assistance on the basis of police reports. As many as 118 persons are still missing, while efforts to confirm the identity of the unidentified bodies and body parts through DNA tests are  progressing.

The government will also give an assistance of Rs 75,000 to those who suffered over 60 per cent disability and Rs 50,000 to those who suffered 40 to 60 per cent disabilities.

Vijayan said that the government would be providing a monthly rental of Rs 6,000 each to families that find their own accommodations or stay with relatives until the government set up proper rehabilitation.

The government is also identifying government buildings and private buildings for providing temporary accommodation. 

Vijayan said that the search for the missing persons was still progressing mainly along the river that flows to Chaliyar in Malappuram. The death toll so far is 231. As many as 206 body parts were also recovered so far.

He said that based on the ongoing study by an expert team appointed by the state government as well as a Lidar survey to be done by NIT, Surathkal, the state government will decide the future land use patterns of the region. The Lidar survey will help in identifying the impact caused by the landslide on the terrain.
