<p>A top Lashkar-e-Toiba militant commander was killed in an encounter with security forces in volatile Sopore town of north Kashmir on Wednesday.<br /><br /></p>.<p>Sources said the operation was launched on Tuesday night by Special Operations Group of the Jammu and Kashmir Police and troops from Army’s 52-Rashtriya Rifles after they received information about the presence of Abu Huzaifa in Sofi Hamam, Chankhan, Sopore, 55 km from here. <br /><br />“When a search party of troops cordoned off the house, in which Huzaifa and another militant were hiding, they fired on security forces leading to a fierce encounter which lasted for six hours. While Huzaifa was killed his accomplice managed to flee from the spot,” they said.<br /><br />Police said one AK rifle, three magazines, 89 rounds of AK ammunition, a UBGL, three UBGL grenades and a hand grenade were recovered from his possession”<br /><br />The house, in which the militants were hiding, has been partially damaged.<br />A senior police officer told Deccan Herald that Huzaifa was active in the region for several years and involved in number of incidents in Sopore and adjoining areas.<br />DH News Service</p>
