New world record of playing damru set in MP's Ujjain

Chief Minister Mohan Yadav congratulated the people for setting the new world record.

Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh chief minister Dr Mohan Yadav on Monday while expressing gratitude complemented the people for the unprecedented accomplishment of creating yet another world record ‘Damaru” ensemble after Tabla and classical dance (Kathak) performances. Dr Yadav was instrumental in spearheading this grand initiative.

The Guinness Book of World Records adjudicator Rishinath presented the official certificate of the world record for Damdu playing. Earlier on December 25, 2023, over 1,500 tabla players got registered in the Guinness World Records by performing tabla playing (in unison) together at the historical fort of Gwalior, MP.

Whilst the second feat was achieved by a group of 1484 Kathak exponents dancing on the rhythm of Raga Basant in Khajuraho, UNESCO world heritage site in MP, on February 20, 2024, to find mention in the Guinness world record.

In a spectacular display of devotion and cultural fervor, the historic city of Ujjain, known as the abode of Lord Shri Mahakal, resonated with the auspicious sounds of 1,500 Damru players. This remarkable event took place on the third Monday of Shravan, creating a new Guinness World Record for the largest ensemble of Damru players, surpassing the previous record of 488 players set by the Federation of Indian Associations in New York.

The event was organized by the joint efforts of the Culture Department, District Administration, and the Mahakal Temple Management Committee. Participants from 25 different groups gathered at Shaktipath near Rudrasagar in Mahakal Lok of the Shri Mahakaleshwar Temple to play the Damru in unison to the tune of the sacred Bhasma Aarti. The rhythmic beats of Damru, cymbals, and manjira filled the air, creating an atmosphere of divine ecstasy and drawing the attention of thousands of spectators.

This record-breaking event is a testament to the city's deep-seated devotion and cultural heritage, further amplifying the grandeur of Baba Mahakal’s procession. Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav's initiatives have significantly enhanced the splendor of the processions, including tribal folk dances and a 350-member police band in previous events. The inclusion of 1,500 Damru players in this year's procession has added a new dimension of magnificence to the celebrations.

Ujjain's successful attempt at creating a world record has not only showcased the city's rich traditions but also its ability to unite in faith and festivity, making it a memorable occasion for all present.
