Mumbai: The financial capital of Mumbai and large stretches of Maharashtra continued to be pounded by heavy rains on Monday even as the administration, police and disaster management agencies maintained high state of alertness.
The Regional Meteorological Centre of the IMD has forecast heavy spells of rain during the day.
The district administration of Raigad, Kolhapur, Chandrapur declared holiday for schools and colleges for the day.
The winter capital of Nagpur too experienced heavy rains.
There was massive inundation and flooding in parts of Kolhapur district, which borders Karnataka, as the catchment areas received heavy rainfall. The Panchganga river is flowing over danger level at several places.
The coastal Konkan districts of Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg have been receiving heavy downpour for the past one week.
Five rivers in the Ratnagiri district - Jagbudi, Vashishti, Shastri, Kajli, Kodvali, Muchkundi and Bavnadi are flowing over the danger level - which disrupted the Mumbai-Goa road traffic.
At the CBD Belapur in the satellite township of Navi Mumbai around 60 revellers had to be rescued by forming a human chain.
Over Sunday, parts of the Mumbai-MMR received over 150 mm rainfall resulting in heavy water logging in some areas.
In its forecast for the next 24 hours starting at 8 AM on Monday, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted "heavy to very heavy rain in the city and suburbs, with the possibility of extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places." According to the civic body, a high tide of 4.59 meters is expected at 12:59 pm.
Malabar and Mulund Hill recorded 34 mm of rainfall between 6 am and 7 am, followed by Bhandup with 29 mm, Wadala East with 24 mm, and Versova with 20 mm.
Western Railway stated that local train services were running normally on Monday morning, however, commuters claimed trains were running late by 5 to 10 minutes.
Central Railway also stated that local services on all four corridors were normal. Commuters, however, said train traffic was affected between Kalyan and Thakurli stations in the morning rush hour due to a signal problem.
"Many commuters are walking on the tracks as trains are halted for a long time," a passenger said.
