Mumbai: Life in the hustling and bustling central Indian city of Nagpur was adversely affected as incessant torrential rains lashed major parts of the region. Inundation was also reported in several parts of the Vidarbha region impacting the traffic movement.
The entire Nagpur city and district received heavy rains over the last 24 hours.
The financial capital of Mumbai and the larger Mumbai metropolitan region too is experiencing heavy rainfall which largely impacted the traffic situation in the area. Mumbai-MMR received as much as 100 to 150 mm rainfall.
The water catchment areas of Mumbai-MMR, including the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, Tungareshwar Wildlife Sanctuary, Tansa Wildlife Sanctuary and Karnala Bird Sanctuary experienced heavy downpour.
The Tulsi Lake inside the SGNP started overflowing from Saturday, the Maharashtra Forest Department and BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation confirmed.
“Heavy rainfall is expected in many places over Nagpur. Heavy rainfall at isolated places over Bhandara, Chandrapur, Wardha and light to moderate rainfall in Yavatmal, Amravati, Gondia, Gadchiroli, Washim districts of Vidarbha is predicted as well”, according to the IMD’s Regional Meteorological Centre in Nagpur.
“The Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model guidance for rainfall for 24 hours indicates heavy to very heavy rainfall in Konkan, Madhya Maharashtra and Vidarbha region besides the ghat sections,” said KS Hosalikar, Scientist - G, Head-IMD Pune.
The situation in Nagpur, which is the worst affected, is being personally monitored by Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
"Life has been disrupted due to heavy rains in Nagpur city and district. I am in constant touch with the Divisional Commissioner, Collector and local administration, and the Collector himself is visiting the city. Schools have been closed and residents of low-lying areas where water has entered have been shifted to safer places. Some roads are closed in some areas. It has been directed that the administration should be vigilant so that there is no inconvenience to the citizens,” said Fadnavis, who is the state Home Minister.
Some parts of Gadchiroli have been disconnected because of heavy rains, according to reports.
The Nag river of Nagpur has swelled at many places.
Waterlogging was reported in Ambazari Layout, Shankar Nagar, Trimurti Nagar, Manewada, and Wathoda among other places.
