Navi Mumbai: Days after the sensational murder of a 20-year-old girl, the Navi Mumbai police have succeeded in arresting the accused Mohammed Dawood Shaikh from Kalaburagi in Karnataka on Tuesday.

According to the Navi Mumbai police, the accused has confessed to the crime.

On the evening of July 25, Yashashri (20), a resident of Belapur, left home saying that she was going out to meet a friend. However, when she did not return, her family lodged a missing person complaint.

On 27 June, her body was found with multiple injury marks and stab wounds near the Uran suburban railway station.

The autopsy report has confirmed multiple wounds.

Yashashri was in a relationship with Shaikh, a driver, however, the girl’s family disapproved of it.

A few years ago, the girl and her family lodged a complaint against Shaikh under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO). After his bail, he left for Karnataka.

Navi Mumbai Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) Deepak Sakore and Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Amar Kale oversaw the investigations.

According to the police, the accused was caught from Shahapur and has confessed to killing the girl. He has been charged under Section 103 of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

“As per the preliminary questioning by the police, he admitted to killing the girl. More details including the motive, shall emerge after we properly interrogate him here,” Sakore said.

Amid protests and mounting pressure, the Navi Mumbai Police, deploying tech-intel, tracked and apprehended Shaikh.

According to Sakore, the victim had gone to meet Shaikh, who lived in Uran for the past few years, and they were friends for 3-4 years, so the kidnap angle is ruled out.

Local BJP leaders have claimed it to be a case of “love jihad”.
