Mumbai: In what hints at a crisis brewing within the Maharashtra unit of Congress, the grand old party on Wednesday removed MLA Zeeshan Siddique as the president of the Indian Youth Congress-Mumbai (MYC).

The development comes close on the heels of Zeeshan’s father Baba Siddique, a three-time MLA from Vandre West, resigning from the Congress and joining the Ajit Pawar-led NCP.

Reacting sharply to the development, Siddique said that he would address a press conference soon.

Mumbai Regional Congress Committee (MRCC) president Prof Varsha Gaikwad, who announced the new appointments in the MYC, said, “Many Congratulations and best wishes to my young brothers Akhilesh Yadav and Sufiyan Mohsin Haider on being newly-appointed as the president and the working president, respectively, of IYC-Mumbai.”

“In Modi's #AnyayKaal, dreams and aspirations of young India have been crushed due to rising unemployment and joblessness. The #BharatJodoNyayYatra is committed to fighting for and achieving #YuvaNyay. I look forward to working closely with Akhilesh and Sufiyan in Mumbai to ensure that the Congress's call for justice reaches every young Mumbaikar,” Prof Gaikwad, an MLA from Dharavi and an ex-minister, posted on X.

However, Zeeshan Siddique has indicated his response soon. “As many as 88,517 MYC members voted for me to become the president, the highest number in the history of Mumbai Youth Congress,” he said.

“This isn’t a nominated post that I have got from lobbying or being a yes man to leaders, I have been elected with the highest margin in the election process. After giving 12 years to the organisation having fought three elections it is unfortunate that I have not received any official intimation from the party and I have to learn about my ousting from media and social media. I am answerable to 88,517 who voted for me and I will be addressing a press conference about this very soon,” he posted on X.
