New statue of Lady Justice unveiled by Supreme Court

Instead of a sword, the Lady Justice now holds the Indian Constitution in her hand and the blindfold has come off to leave her with open eyes.

The renowned Lady Justice now holds a copy of the Indian Constitution and has shed the blindfold, All India Radio News reported.

In a bid to shed our colonial past, a new statue of Lady Justice was unveiled in the judges' library of the Supreme Court.

However, some changes were made to this statute. Instead of a sword the Lady Justice holds the Indian Constitution in her hand and the blindfold has come off to leave her with open eyes.

Lady Justice stands as symbol for upholding justice for many courts around the world.

Earlier, the Lady of Justice was depicted as a woman wearing a blindfold while holding scales and a sword.

The blindfold represented equality before law, which implied that justice should be delivered without regard to wealth, power or status.

The scales represented the balance and fairness while the sword represented the power of the law.

As per several media reports, it is said that Justice D Y Chandrachud believes India should move forward from the colonial British legacy thus sending out a message that the law is never blind, it sees everyone equally.

As per an NDTV report, one of their sources said, "Therefore, the Chief Justice said that the form of the Lady of Justice should be changed. He said the statue should have the Constitution in one hand and not a sword, so that a message goes out to the country that she dispenses justice according to the Constitution. The sword is a symbol of violence but courts deliver justice according to constitutional laws."
