New Delhi: A batch of petitions has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking a review of its December 11, 2023, judgment which upheld the decision to withdraw the special status of Jammu and Kashmir granted under Article 370 of the Constitution by holding that it was a temporary provision.

The petitioners included the Jammu and Kashmir High Court Bar Association, Awami National Conference, Muzaffar Iqbal Khan and Jammu and Kashmir People’s Movement.

A five-judge Constitution bench of the Supreme Court led by Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud upheld the Centre's 2019 decision to abrogate Article 370.

The court had unanimously held that Article 370 was a temporary provision, but asked the centre to restore the statehood of Jammu and Kashmir and hold elections there by September 2024.

The court also held as constitutionally valid the decision to carve out Ladakh as a Union Territory.
