Prime Minister Narendra Modi has proposed to admit the African Union as a full member of the G20 at the bloc’s 18th summit, which he will host in New Delhi on September 9 and 10.

Modi has written to his counterparts in the other G20 nations proposing that the African Union’s request for full membership of the bloc should be accepted at the upcoming Delhi Summit of G20, according to sources in New Delhi.

India’s move to use its G20 presidency to support the African Union’s bid to get a berth in the premier forum for international economic cooperation has come amid China’s bid to further expand its influence in the continent.

A source in New Delhi said that the Prime Minister’s initiative was “a step towards a just, fair, more inclusive and representative global architecture and governance”.
