The incident occurred when the driver of the over-speeding van lost control over the wheel and dashed into the stationary lorry from rear-side on NH-5 at around 0400 hours, Narsipatnam DSP N Narasimha Kishore told PTI.
The driver might have lost sight on the road due to fog conditions resulting in the mishap, he said. Eight persons were killed on the spot and two others died while undergoing treatment at a hospital. The condition of two among the 12 who received injuries was critical, another police officer said.
The van loaded with fish was carrying about 22 fishermen who after purchasing the fish-stock were on their way to Mandapeta in Visakhapatnam district to sell it, he said.
