Haryana Govt Formation Highlights: Khattar takes oath as Haryana's CM, Chautala as Deputy CM

Manohar Lal Khattar has become the chief minister of Haryana, with Dushyant Chautala of the Jannayak Janta Party (JJP) as his deputy. This will be Manohar Lal Khattar's second consecutive term as the chief minister of the state. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday congratulated Manohar Lal Khattar and Dushyant Chautala on being sworn in as chief minister and deputy chief minister of Haryana respectively. BJP working president J P Nadda, Punjab Governor V P Singh Badnore, former Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal, Union ministers Krishan Pal Gurjar, R L Kataria, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jairam Thakur, former Haryana chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, SAD chief Sukhbir Singh Badal were present on the occasion. Jannayak Janta Party leader Dushyant Chautala's father Ajay Chautala, who stepped out of the Tihar jail on Saturday on a furlough, and Dushyant's mother Naina Chautala, who has been re-elected MLA for the second time were also present.

PM Modi congratulated Manohar Lal Khattar and Dushyant Chautala for taking oath as the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister of Haryana respectively. He tweeted, "best wishes to them as they work to fulfil the aspirations of the people of Haryana."

"Dushyant does not take any decision before taking my advice and when he met me before forming the alliance, I gave my nod for the same," he told ANI.

Manohar Lal Khattar was unanimously elected as the leader of the BJP legislative party in Haryana here on Saturday.

The announcement was made by Union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad.

Prasad, along with Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) general secretary Arun Singh, attended the legislative party meeting as central observers.

Khattar's name was proposed by MLAs Anil Vij and Kanwar Pal and seconded by other BJP legislators.

Jatland election results take a toss

The Haryana election results took a sharp turn, on Thursday, as Congress gained ground winning 31 seats. This shook the stronghold of BJP in the Jatland. The saffron party, on the other hand, became the largest party in the state with a 3% increase in vote share, still failed to even get close to the halfway mark, winning only 39 seats.
JJP won 10 seats, ultimately making Dushyant Chautala the kingmaker, which in itself is a huge win for the party considering that it was founded on December 2018 and gained such popularity.
INLD gets the biggest blow, as its vote share decreased by 2.45 per cent in this election as compared to that in 2014.

Despite a drop in the number of seats, the vote share of the BJP went up by over three per cent in the Haryana assembly elections.

With the party winning 40 seats, the BJP has secured 36.48 per cent of votes, up from 33.20 per cent in the 2014 assembly polls.

Yesterday, re-polling took place in five polling booths in various assembly constituencies of Haryana. State's joint chief electoral officer Dr. Inder Jeet said that some shortcomings were noticed in the polling booths earlier that forced the election commission to re-poll.

The re-polling wasbeing held in booth number 71 of Uchana Kalan Assembly constituency in Jind district, 161 of Beri constituency in Jhajjar district, 28 of Narnaul Assembly constituency in Narnaul district, 18 of Kosli in district Rewari and booth number 113 of Prithla in Faridabad district, officials said.

A low voter turnout this time in Haryana

On 21 October, Haryana recorded a voter turnout of 65 per cent in the assembly polls, a sharp drop from the 2014 elections which brought the BJP to power in the state. The turnout was less than the 76.54 percentage in the 2014 assembly elections and the 70.36 per cent recorded over the state’s 10 parliamentary constituencies in the Lok Sabha elections this year.

An exit poll on Haryana elections publicised on Tuesday predicted a neck-and-neck race with BJP failing to get majority and Congress just a breath away in catching up with its opponent, contradicting almost all other predictions which gave the saffron party a definite edge.

The India Today-Axis My India poll claimed BJP will get 32-44 seats while Congress is likely to bag 30-42 seats. The majority mark in the Haryana Assembly is 46.

If this poll comes true, both BJP and Congress will have to lean on Jannayak Janata Party (JJP), which is predicted to get 6-10 seats and others, including INLD, that could bag another 6-10 seats for forming the government.

BJP buoyed by exit poll predictions

Counting of votes in the Haryana assembly election will take place on Thursday with the BJP looking to retain power, its hopes buoyed by exit polls that indicate an easy victory.

A counting centre has been set up in each of the 90 assembly constituencies and there is an additional centre in Gurgaon’s Badshahpur segment, which had a larger number of polling booths.

“The counting of votes will begin at 8 am,” Haryana's joint chief electoral officer Inder Jeet told PTI on Wednesday.

The electronic voting machines (EVMs) and the VVPAT paper trail machines used in Monday’s polling are kept at 90 strongrooms set up at 59 different locations, he said.
