The last rites will be performed around 2.30 pm with full State honours, a senior BJP leader.

BJP workers and mourners queued up in large numbers outside the party headquarters since morning to pay their last respects to the leader.

Posters remembering Jaitley have been put up on the roads leading to the Nigambodh Ghat, on the banks of the Yamuna river.

The 66-year-old leader passed away at the AIIMS here on Saturday. He was undergoing treatment at the hospital, where he was admitted on August 9.

People of a group of villages in Dabhoi taluka of Vadodara district on Saturday mourned the demise of BJP leaderArunJaitleyby downing shutters of shops and holding condolence meetings.

Jaitley, a three time Rajya Sabha MP from Gujarat, had adopted Karnali, Pipaliya, Vadia and Baglipura, all part of Karnali group panchayat, in December 2014 under the Centre's Sansad Adarsh Gram Yojana.

Jaitleydied at AIIMS in Delhi on Saturday afternoon after prolonged illness. He was 66.

"People of Karnali and Pipaliya, Vadia and Baglipura expressed grief by closing shops and attending condolence meetings.Jaitleyhad rolled out a plan to modernise Karnali village, situated on the banks of Narmada river," Rajni Pandya, chief priest of a famous Lord Shiva temple here told PTI.

"Jaitleyhelped develop various facilities in Karnali where lakhs of Lord Shiva devotees visit the Kuber Bhandari temple every year," Pandya said.

Jaitleyhad spent a day in his adopted village on June 1, 2015, and had also laid the foundation stone of a water tank and modern post office.

Among his plans for the village was construction of a bridge between Karnali and Chandod, located on the other side of the Narmada river, so that devotees could visit religious places without having to take a long road detour.

"We had been holding special prayers in the temple every day from August 10, soon afterJaitleywas admitted in AIIMS. The puja continued till today," he said.

Arun Jaitley is haemodynamically stable

"Arun Jaitley was admitted to AIIMS today morning. He is currently undergoing treatment in the Intensive Care Unit under the supervision of a multidisciplinary team of doctors. At present, he is haemodynamically stable," said the hospital in a statement on Friday night.

Hemodynamically stable means the patient has a stable heart pump and the blood circulation is good.

Jaitley underwent surgery in the United States in January for a reported soft tissue cancer in his left leg, an illness that deprived him of presenting the Modi government's sixth and final budget of its current term. Railways and Coal Minister Piyush Goyal was the stand-in finance minister who presented the interim budget for 2019-20.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad are at AIIMS.

Jaitley had his fair share of controversies, one of which was accusing the CBI of engaging ininvestigative adventurism when the agency named Chanda Kochhar, her husband Deepak Kochhar and Venugopal Dhoot as beneficiaries in the ICICI Bank-Vodafone scam. He said naming corrupt officials would not help in the investigation.

Jaitley was an outspoken supporter of LGBT rights and had asked the Supreme Court to reconsider its decision on Section 377. However, he said he did not believe that sexuality was part of free speech when the Supreme Court struck down Section 377 last year.

Modi arrives at AIIMS to check up on Jaitley

During his time as the Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Jaitley was instrumental during the talks on Women Reservation Bill and was a strong supporter of Anna Hazare's Lokpal demand.

He successfully introduced the 84th amendment to the Constitution of India, freezing parliamentary seats until 2026 and the 91st amendment in 2004, penalising defections.

During the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government in 1999, Jaitley held a number of posts includingMinister of State for Information and Broadcasting (Independent Charge), Minister of State for Disinvestment (Independent Charge) and Ministry of Law, Justice and Company Affairs.

He was elevated to the post of a Cabinet Minister in November 2000 and was theMinister of Law, Justice and Company Affairs and Shipping.

Jaitley, an LLB graduate, practiced law before several High Courts and the Supreme Court since 1987. During his tenure as an advocate, he did paperwork into the Bofors scandal and represented PepsiCo and Coca-Cola in various cases.
