Manipur CM briefs Amit Shah about evolving situation; says Centre, state controlled violence to 'great extent'

Singh said there has been no report of casualties since June 13 due to the violence in Manipur.

A day after the all-party meet on the situation in Manipur, Chief Minister N Biren Singh met Union Home Minister Amit Shah at Delhi on Sunday.

“Called on Hon’ble Union Home Minister, Shri Amit Shah ji in New Delhi today and briefed about the evolving situation on the ground in Manipur. Under Amit Shah Ji’s close supervision, the State and Central Govt have been able to control the violence to a great extent in the past week,” Singh tweeted.

“It may be noted that there has been no report of casualties due to the violence since the 13th of June. Hon’ble Union HM assured that the central government will take all possible steps to bring normalcy in Manipur,” Singh added.

Apart from Singh, BJP Manipur in-charge Sambhit Patra, party Rajya Sabha MP and royal Leishemba Sanajaoba, as well as speaker T Satyabrata Singh also attended the meet.

This is Singh’s first visit to the national capital after clashes broke out between the Meiteis and the Kukis in the Manipur, leaving over 100 people dead and thousands displaced. He went back to Imphal late Sunday night.

Opposition parties have demanded Singh’s ouster. Congress’s chief spokesperson Jairam Ramesh said that Singh’s continuation as CM is “untenable beyond doubt”. “Every single minute Biren Singh continues as CM is a minute wasted towards efforts to bring peace and begin the reconciliation process in Manipur,” Ramesh tweeted.

At Saturday’s all party meet, the Congress’s representative, former CM Okram Ibobi Singh, said that despite being the only Manipuri in the meeting, he was allotted only 7 minutes.
