West Bengal Polls highlights: TMC's letter regarding Nandigram incident full of insinuations and averments, ECI says in response

TMC supremo and West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee was injured in an alleged attack hours after she filed her nomination from Nandigram. While there was support and queries for her health, the BJP claimed she was doing 'drama' for sympathy. The TMC has deferred its manifesto release schedule following the injury to Mamata Banerjee.

ECI says, "DGP wasn't removed without any application of mind. It was the outcome of the recommendation given by Special Observers. Yesterday, also when the Commission became aware of the incident, a report was immediately sought from WB Chief Secretary andSpecial Observers within 48 hours."

Election Commission says that it is indeed an "unfortunate incidentand needs to be inquired into with promptitude and dispatch".

It added that it is completely incorrect to suggest that "Commission has taken over law andorder machinery in the state in the name of conducting elections and appropriated whole governance structure".

TMC memorandum over Mamata injuries 'full of insinuations and averments', EC responds

The Election Commission on Thursday sent a strongly-worded letter to the Trinamool Congress on its memorandum over injuries to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee during campaign, saying it looks "undignified to even respond" to allegations that the poll panel is doing things in the state at the behest of a "particular party".

The EC said at the outset, it needs to be stated that injuries sustained by Banerjee at Nandigram "is indeed an unfortunate incident and deserves to be inquired into with promptitude and dispatch." (PTI)

Modi, Shah lacked courtesy to enquire about Bengal CM's wellbeing after 'attack': TMC leader

The TMC on Thursday claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah "lacked the courtesy" to enquire about the health condition of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who sustained injuries in Nandigram during a poll campaign the day before.

Party's Secretary General Partha Chatterjee told reporters here that it would have taken a few minutes for the two BJP heavyweights to call up and find out about the TMC supremo's wellbeing, but none of them made an effort. (PTI)
