Deadly Dutee lands another sprint gold

 ONGC’s Dutee Chand completed a sprint double, winning the 200M gold while Indian Railways retained the overall team championships on the final day of the 53rd Open National Athletics Championships here on Monday.

Odisha girl Dutee, a bronze medallist at the Asian Championships in Pune, timed 24.02 seconds to finish three hundredth of second ahead of Chavi Sharawat of Railways in the final on a rain-hit day.

Triple jump national record-holder Renjith Maheswary missed out on the gold medal with Arpinder Singh edging him out by six centimetres. Renjith leapt to 16.64 metres to settle for the silver.

Distance runner Suriya Loganathan was another athlete winning a double. Suriya, winner of the 5000M on the opening day, claimed the 10000M on the final day.On Monday, M R Poovamma won the women’s 400M in 53.96 seconds, edging out Tintu Luka of Railways in a close finish. Tintu clocked 53.98. Karnataka’s Ashwini Akkunji, making her competitive return, was fifth in 55.22 seconds, behind Anu Mariam Jose (54.59).

Railways finished with a tally of 282 points to win the overall title ahead of Services (163). Services won the men’s title while Railways (180 points) emerged women’s champions. 

Durgesh Kumar Pal, the winner of the men’s 400M hurdles, was declared the best athlete in the men’s section while the honours in the women’s section went to Merlin Joseph, whose national record of 11.35 in the 100M semifinals has come under question from several quarters.
