Zulqarnain's wife, Shazia, and his two daughters were stopped from boarding a flight to London yesterday morning by FIA officials at the Lahore airport. They were told to contact the British High Commission in Islamabad and the Pakistan cricket Board.
"I don't know why they stopped me from going to London as we had valid visas and passports and tickets for the journey," Shazia told reporters after being forced to return home.
"It has been four months since I last saw my husband and my daughters want to be with their father, yet we are being prevented from joining him in London," she said.
Zulqarnain fled the Pakistan team hotel in Dubai during a one-day series against South Africa last november, claiming that he was threatened by a person who wanted him to fix matches.
Zulqarnain then sought asylum in London, and was granted a temporary residence permit by the home authorities till they decide on his application.
One of Zulqarnain's brothers said it was hard to understand the prevailing situation.
"The FIA authorities just took the passports and said they had got written intimation from a official of the British High Commission to not allow Zulqarnain's wife or daughters to board the flight to London," he said.
"We have now been told to contact the high commission and PCB on Monday," he said.
Another close relative alleged that the fact that Zulqarnain's family members have been asked to contact the PCB indicated that the it had something to do with the authorities not allowing them to travel to London.
The PCB was not very pleased after Zulqarnain posted a message on his facebook account claiming that he was ready to sue the PCB and members of the fact-finding committee for defaming him and calling him "weird and mentally unstable".
The PCB responded by stating that Zulqarnain was free to initiate legal proceedings against the board, but only after facing charges of indiscipline and violating the terms of his central contract with the board.
"He is a fugitive and he has to first answer for his actions," PCB legal advisor, Tafazzul Rizvi had said.
Former Test captain, Rashid Latif hoped the issue is sorted out at the earliest."It is not good for Pakistan cricket and I feel sorry for his family members. The PCB should try to resolve this issue once and for all and send someone to go and meet him personally in London."If he is wrong he should be penalized, but I don't think his family should suffer," Latif said.
